North Korean Airspace

My buddy who flies MD-11's for FedEx says that when they fly ANC-ICN that they talk to North Korean controllers but avoid NK airspace...He said that for safety reasons they are required to communicate with NK to ensure that they (the Koreans) know who they (FedEx) are and that FedEx has no hostile intentions...
