Well, they did cancel 180 flights that weekend, which is a rather large percentage systemwide. All in all, you were rather lucky.

It's a fact that UA faces shortages almost every month due to the stafffing levels it has elected to maintain. The shortages turn into flight cancellations when weather pushes staff to their monthly maximums.
