Using Coupon codes w/o attached awd

Hi everyone. I have a possibly stupid question that I was wondering if anyone could answer. I've noticed that some coupons from companies (ie United Airlines) have a coupon for something like a free upgrade. Is it possible to use the coupon code from the united coupon, but use a different awd number for the rate. For example, the fine print for one united offer reads:
"Visit or call 1-800-831-8000. Remember to provide coupon number UUAA073 when you make your advance reservation and your Mileage Plus number at the time of rental. This offer is in addition to the special savings you can receive whenever you mention your Avis Worldwide Discount (AWD) number K019300 visit or call"
This kind of implies that if I don't want their "special savings" that I can still use the coupon. Doesn't it? I have singled out united here, but there are quite a few companies that do this. Will they honor it? Thanks for any input.
