Squat toilets are very very common in Asia. They are the predecessors of western-style toilets. Anyway, in Singapore, these toilets still exist in some places usually to cater to the elderly who are not used to using the toilet seats and hence have a higher tendency to squat, rather than sit on them. I think squatting pans still exist in some places because of the hygiene factor - the fact that they is no bodily contact between the toilet and the user.
