If you were able to take a few days off to support her, and she was only planning on staying a few days for the funeral, then perhaps this might be an opportunity for using a companion flies free fare offer - not sure if you can get it outside Amex Plat; if it looks like you will be spending large amounts anyway, this mioght work out cost effective, especially if return date is not final.

Also consider a RTW fare like The Great Escapade. Assuming there is availability in that fare class, of course. www.thegreatescapade.com
