I totally agree, since the curtain to the galley has disappeared row 1 lost its appeal for the reasons you mention.

However, the footrest in row 1 should maintain its horizontal position while you are reclined. If it doesn't, ask for it to be repaired before takeoff. The small hydraulic cylinder that keeps it up is worn out on many row 1 seats.

Most people including FAs look at me funny when I test all functions of my assigned seat as soon as I get on the plane. But I've been plagued by too many semi-functional seats to care!
