I am showing my age but remember when there were only 2 class planes? Back then it was First and Coach. With the advent of the 3 class plane, they added Business.

As others have said, it is marketing that drives the identification. If you did not fly much and had a choice of UA Business or AA First for the same price, what would your choice be?
