Out of all my flights, I have never heard this before.

Complete BS. I've never had such a problem, but then again I usually ask if standing around for a few minutes to stretch poses a problem, which it never does. I'm always careful to let them say that if I'm getting in the way, just let me know and it's always after the meal service is over. The worst thing that's ever happened is that they threaten to put me to work. I'd say that you had the misfortune to get a bad crew.
