Of course there is something wrong with what the FA did. The FA's actions led to discomfort on the part of the OP. It probably also embarrassed the 2 Asian passengers. If the FA asks anyone in the exit row whether he or she speaks English, every passenger should be asked, either individually, or as a group (e.g. "Do all of you seated in rows 9 and 10 speak English?")
