French hotels can be very "French" and different to someone expecting the more American type (read bland) presentation where everything is the same from room to room. Beds in France always seem to be too soft or too hard and they all seem to date to the 19th century - none of the new bed craze as going on with the hotels in North America. The bedbugs would concern me, but many hotels have this issue from time to time as you can't de-louse the guests at the door

Regarding hotels under renovation, I've stayed at the Shelbourne in Dublin before it closed for it's renovation and stay at the Grosvenor House in London quite often now while it has been under renovation and found both to be very good properties with very attentive staffs to serve you more to take your mind off the ongoing renovations. if you can live with some frayed wallpaper and carpet here and there, the value for the money is usually very good. I think the lack of a "choices" card for the Plat gift is more of a hotel issue that hopefully Marriott can teach them why it's the best way to offer the gift to those picky Plats - not me I swear

I have had many Marriott hotels in Europe give me more than the Plat gift as my room would have a bottle of wine or a local book on art or such in the room with a personal letter from the GM when I arrived. It sounds like the OP travels a lot - I would have included those suggestions to the GM in the letter as things to think about.
