Last time we rented from Avis they made him come back inside and show his drivers liscence. I was not a happy camper.
I don't even see why this was an issue - the terms and conditions at Avis don't require you to declare your spouse or partner in advance (i.e. he doesn't need to be on the rental agreement).
You just have to give him your permission to drive the car for it to be legit.
