What's the purpose of security scanning your PYOBP?

Guess I won't see an answer over here.

Why do security scan your PYOBP? Is it just a basic check to prove you have a valid document and haven't photo-shopped something together (i.e. the bar code references your PNR somehow and gives the guy a go/no-go for you?)

Or does it tie into BA's system to let them know of your arrival in the airport?

Or perhaps something else?

Or some/all of these?
