The two runways are also too close together to allow both of them to be used at the same time I think.

All correct, I know that night maintenance on the main runway can be a pain in the butt when fog rolls in, as the secondary runway has no ILS.
You would think BAA or whoever would learn to clear the toys away quickly enough when the weather deteriorates. Or install CAT III equipment on the emergency runway, from what I gather this isn't an infrequent occurence (for an airport that masquerades as the busiest single-runway airport in the world).
But I do love LGW, all the same
