I would like to counter the Detroit comment.
While it can be quite cold in the Winter, in the summer, it has the perfect weather.
Additionally, while it doesn;t have the attractions of LA, Chicago, or NY, it does have some fairly good attractions like the DIA, the Detroit Science Center, Henry Ford, as well as three very good sports teams.
The suburbs also have some of the best shopping in the country (I would say top 10).
