You can actually use the upgrade certificates on domestic award travel! (Not that I believe it is worth it.)
On award tickets, on advance upgrades reservations are accepted, however they can be used at check-in or even onboard the aircraft if there is a seat available. Use of the cert in this fashion places a 5000 yen value on the cert. If you'll have the chance to use the certs for Intl travel I'd look into wether or not you can actually do the standard day of departure 5000 yen cash buy up to SS on an award ticket before wasting the cert.
