I've seen this happen before, and have seen how many people missed the flight. UA usually seems to try to get them onto other carriers where possible and certainly will try to get them onto another UA flight as well.
I had this happen to me once, almost missed a connecting flight, then vowed I would "stay close" to a place/source of flight information in the future and expect the unexpected, viz., that UA or other airlines would move up a departure time significantly.
