Number_6's post is probably more useful than anything I can come up with.

I have extended family in Rotterdam, so it's pretty rude for me to go off to a restaurant on my own. Alas, this has meant that my experience has been pretty limited. I first ate it in the recording studios of a Radio station in Amsterdam about 10 years ago - Our hosts had sent out for take out and I got this completely unfamiliar tray of food. I remember Indian style potatoes, Indonesian style curry and even Japanese style pickles all complementing each other wonderfully and the 'whole' tasting light and refreshing.
Since then my 'aunt' and her friends have also ordered for me in Rotterdam, either in the restauranats I've been to or when we've had it delivered, so I've eaten from a selection of mystery plates on the table along with my companions.

The link gives a reasonable idea of some of the individual dishes, but doesn't really help explain why it is that they all 'go' together so well, and why there is a distinctive and recognisable taste to Surinamese food.
