As far as I can remember you can just cancel your flights first and re-book after Nicolo comes back ...

We called Alitalia main reservation desk, we were told to call Orbitz. Orbitz said thay will change the tickets but asked us to return the paper tickets we hold. We are afraid to do so and cannot wait for Nicolo who returns after our scheduled departure.
