At risk of getting too far off-topic, it is an unfair assumption to equate maintenance & safety to where the work is done. I've seen some things in American (as in USA) shops that would scare you.

Furthermore, I know for sure that NW does (did?) airframe maintenance outside the USA (AMECO-China for example) and they have no glaring safety problems. Also, let's not forget about engine maintenance which is done all around the world.

Next, did you all know that Delta and American are large users of surplus/used/copy aircraft parts? Does this make them less safe? Not necessecarily if they follow the rules set by the FAA. I'd say the way an airline is managed and the culture of quality at the airline is more important than all else ... especially where the work is done.

As for which airline is better, I guess it depends on where you will fly, but IMHO, AA beats DL hands down. Try one cross country flight with each and you'll see what I mean ... I'd rate DL's coach product as the worst in the industry ... mix up some RJs for 2+ hours and then some 32" seat pitch and your in for misery. Not to mention the inevitable connection in ATL.

Have you considered UA?

PS - I take that worst in industry comment back ... that honor goes to America West.
