This may be too late to help, but someone stumbling into this thread may find it useful to check the fares at thai's singapore office, at at agents in Singapore. I don't check J fares, but vaguely remember a SIN-BKK-JFK-BKK-SIN J being about US$3300, excluding tax.

If you don't mind the trouble, it could work out.
