all, please... you are comparing uncomparable... trips from Europe will almost
never yield same cpm as trips from (within) US.
1) taxes are killer. I won't be surprized if EUR 100-200 from the fare OP advised are taxes/fees/surcharges.
2) for the same reason one should forget routing through any other European city (routing through London therefore is out of question - landing there would depress your poket for £50 or more easily (would specifically avoid question of paying GB air passenger duty which theoretically is not payable on transit, but some airlines keep including it in taxes

))
3) cheapest *A/OW/Skyteam MR usually require finding cheapest ticket to one of US gateways and one or several US domestic mileage runs.
4) any MR to/through US require hotel booking for first night (i.e. taking flight to west coast and immediate redeye to east cost (sleeping on a plane) would not work.
Edited to add: go for Hawaii - it worth the price. Please do not make it a MR - just have a great time and treat miles earned flying there as a bonus
P.S: currently United sells Hawaii for EUR 1019 (17.07.06 –31.08.2006) so if you can move your trip a little bit earlier you can save some EURs
