B-fares are the type of fares Northwest actually makes money on. They don't make money on K-fares.
You have a different situation than many of us do if you have the time and flexibility to fly on K-fares. The people NW really wants to attract, are those who are willing to pay more for the right schedule, etc.
They are not going to let a challenge go through on low fares as it doesn't really make them any money!
Kudos to you if you can make it happen otherwise, though.
