BTW, does anybody remember if Haneda was HND or TYO before Narita opened in around 1978?
I remember my luggage being tagged TYO when I flew in to Haneda in 1977.
As far as my first flight is concerned, it was actually a series of flights, since in those days (1967) you could fly within Europe on the same ticket that you flew TO Europe. You just had to pay the price to your most expensive city. We went from JFK to LHR on Pan Am. I still remember the thrill of waking up and seeing Ireland and Wales out the window, which is why I'm a firm believer in letting pax contorl their own window shades!
From there, we flew BEA to Oslo. The BEA flight was delayed for two hours, so they apologetically led us to a lounge, where they served us tea and sandwiches. A flight on Braathens took us to Trondheim, where my relatives lived.
We then flew SAS to CPH, and from there, Lufthansa to Hannover, where we picked up a car and spent the next two weeks driving around Germany and Austria to visit more relatives. We left the car in Cologne and flew LH to Paris.
From there, we flew AF to AMS, and then KLM back to JFK.
I am about to make my first trip to Europe since that long-ago flight. However, I've flown enough domestically and in Asia to know that I can't expect comfy seats only 5 across or tournedos of beef in coach class. I only hope that I will once again be able to watch Ireland and Wales come into view as we hit the British Isles.
