My backpack just barely fits in the overhead bins on 753's and 319/320's, has to go in the FC closet on 752's, and has to be gate-checked on RJ's. I'd never check it, since it tends to contain about $4-5K worth of photographic/computer gear.
On a recent flight carrying my Porta-Brace camera bag over my shoulder...
"Sir, that's oversized, you'll have to gate check that."
Withotu saying anything, I open up the big blue bag and reveal the $50,000 Ikegami television camera with the $30,000 lens inside.
"Oh, I understand. let me find a place for that..."
Never said one word. They understood.
