This cards roots can be traced to the the enRoute Gold card which issued luggage tags.

The enRoute card technically never offered luggage tags. When the Gold card was created, it was part of a by-invitation program for Air Canada's commercially important people, and dubbed the 'en Route Club'. enRoute was also AC's proprietary credit card, and only those who had been invited to join the en Route Club, could hold a Gold version of the otherwise Red enRoute credit card.

One of the items offered with the enRoute Club membership was a rather impressive chocolate brown luggage tag with the enRoute and AC logos in gold printing. I still have a few.

Other club benefits were access to AC's Maple Leaf Lounges, priority check-in and other things we now associate with elite status in Aeroplan. And oh yes, a really great bronze paperweight in the shape of AC's logo as was then found on the MLL doors.
