Yes it would be strange but I wouldn't be surprised. Prior to the separation of arriving and departing pax at AKL airport, QF used to have gate screening for flights to Australia. Supposedly this was a "requirement". Unfortunately for them no other airline flying AKL to Australia (NZ, SJ, DJ, TG, EK, LA, AR, BI, PH, TN) bothered.

I agree - domestic travel in Australia or NZ is much more pleasant than in US. BTW there are ways to avoid the random explosives testing in Australia. They continuously test so just fumble with your bags once through the xray (or not as the case may be)
