A little bit off topic, but one of my friends (white) learned French in high school from a Vietnamese teacher. On their class trip to France, they got laughed and constantly insulted by the Parisians because they had a "peasant" Vietnamese accent in their French.
I guess it's the similar to learning English from Jackie Chan.

I met a lady in Hanoi who spoke English with a strong French accent but not a word of French. (Her English teacher was French.)
I originally learnt Vietnamese in Hanoi but then worked in Saigon. So my own accent became a mess (even after you ignore the English accent). To make things worse, I had the bright idea of choosing an assistant on the basis of poor English ability (so my Vietnamese would improve) - she turned out to be from Hue and had the bizarre accent to match.
