Reading your earlier comment James, I thought you were saying that if you arrive 2 months before expiry, they give you the 90 day visa and the passport is considered valid until that time (i.e. an extra month).
Oh yes, I see what you mean. I didn't mean to imply that.
The language used by the US Embassy website is slightly misleading, I think: they don't appear to
extend the validity of a passport, but rather just waive the rule. I don't have personal experience of a situation that extreme, but I would agree with your intepretation of the rule.
