Automatic generation of an award at 16 credits and replacement of expired awards are both legacies of the days of paper awards. When Southwest went electronic, I wonder whether or how hard they thought about changing to just banking credits as other airlines bank miles.

As others here have pointed out, a banking system provides much greater flexibility both to handle complicated situations and to create them.
