Probably the worse place to check a laptop is on a flight to LAX. The luggage is delivered on a steep luggage conveyor and drops into the carousel at a steep angle. To top that off, otrher suitcases and luggage may follow your laptop bag and crash into your computer, possibly damaging it.

Please carry-on your laptop, checking it is very risky, and it could be stolen as laptops are a high value item.
