Given TSA's (and private screening contractors operating at a few airports under TSA supervision) pathological focus on shoes and the disregard of commercial cargo transported on passenger airliners, I would say that aviation screening in the U.S. is an expensive joke. Puffers, backscatter X-rays, MRI machines would all provide more thorough screening than the current system.
