It has happened twice to me. Once in DC and in MPLS. The DC folks got me a can to the other place and made somewhat good on it. (But since my flight was late I got there at 1AM)

At MPLS I flew in the morning, went to work and went to check in at 5 PM. They gave me the nonsense that my room was not guaranteed by CC etc.

No walk, no compensation, no nothing and MPLS is a tough place to get a room when a show is in town.

I was not moving until I got my room. The manager came by and gave me the same nonsense. I told him I was no tourist and I would call his corporate HQ and tell them exactly what had happened. I got my room.

Since I am an elite at the places I commonly stay this has not happened in years.
