How absurd. But not surprising considering Amtrak's track record of maintenance.
First the electronic wireless seat reservation/inventory management never worked and was never deployed despite $$$ spent on it (that's those electronic name tags that are never used above your Acela seat).
Then came the gradual disuse of the at seat music system.
And now this.
What a way to keep up Amtrak's flagship fleet. Feh!
It is hard to imagine that SQ or CX would allow their top service to be so poorly maintained over such a seemingly easy maintenance item.
(We won't even mention the axle/wheelsets fiasco).
