I know some will disagree with me, but in 17 visits to Scotland, we rarely rent a vehicle. You can get to so many places by train or bus - and save a lot of money doing so.
We tend to only rent when we are on an island like Mull or Skye. Between our feet, local buses, an occassional taxi, we have managed quite well to see much of the highlands without resorting to renting a car.

There are four of us traveling together, so we thought it would be cheaper to rent a car. Maybe we need to research that a little more.
