They might be useful for getting on an upgrade list, seat selection, confirming a rebooking/receiving an updated board pass, or other things. I know for sure that DL plans to automate IROPS with kiosks, so maybe these are what you saw? I saw a setup of machines and readers in DFW where the customer service area used to be.
