We're going to have to agree to disagree on this. The OP definitely screwed up by not following the info on the message and choosing to call the reservations desk and not ual.com support. The fact they may very well get the charge removed from their bill does not remove the appropriateness of the charge for the transaction completed based on the current terms of business with UA.
