That having been said, yes there is also a copyright issue for stuff, and that is why the US/North America is perfectly suited for this, and Europe/the rest of the World isn't. However satellite was considered for IFE distribution, but I don't know how far the investigations into it went, I/the company stopped doing IFE content, so lost touch. I believe that this was to be a dedicated service, not just a rebroadcast of existing services, which probably would have meant seperate licenses, but that's not much difference to the current situation.
"Live" in-flight TV is plenty possible if Connexion by Boeing or something of the sort was offered by BA or more airlines. Pair that up with a computer, a "sling box", and you can be watching whatever you watch at "home" from the comfort of a plane seat -- like is well possible with some flights on Lufthansa, El Al, SAS, ANA, etc.
