Do beware that availability is not going to come easily. I've tried this a number of times from Hawaii and have had -0- success (back in my 1K days). I originally flew DTW-LIH via ORD,SFO and wanted to go back KOA-DTW via SFO, ORD after we took a side trip to Kona. There was NO availability up until the day of the flight, even though the flight had a number of empty revenue seats. I didn't want to chance to go standy - instead, we ended up taking Aloha, forcing us KOA-HNL-LIH-SFO-ORD-DTW. Needless to say, our luggage never left the Aloha state and we got it a day later.
