I wasn't even aware that St. Georg has (now) a large gay population. But generally speaking, St. Georg and Steindamm are "not good". However, friends tell me, that in Lange Reihe are some good, interesting restaurants .. have never been there.
A 'walk through St. Pauli/Reeperbahn' is fine ... and for an excuse, he can say: 'I was looking for Restaurant Cuneo, Davidstrasse 11' Oldest Italian restaurant in Germany, 101 years....lots of VIPs, including the painter Bruno Bruni.
