Next time somebody is talking about flying, they mention DL and their great cake.
Next time someone is booking a flight, and it is almost the same cost as Airtran, or Jetblue or WN, they pick DL because they have those great deserts, or snack, or whatever.
What am I missing here? These seems like a surefire way to get more business.

I agree with you completely.
Problem is, conventional wisdom is that each and every air passenger only cares about price (if they did, then nobody would ever buy F, Y or B). And the executives at the full service legacy carriers actually believe the BS about people only caring about price. And so service continues to decline at the legacy airlines while the LCCs just eat their lunch (cake?).
