The new system is a big plus for me. I take 3-4 business trips a year on DL, AF and KE always in paid J or F so the double MQM's helped me requalify for Platinum this year in August. I use the PMU's for a couple leisure trips to Europe a year. I only take 4-6 domestic trips a year and will miss the automatic upgrades from K class and above when booking. If I am going to pay more for a K fare then I want to be sure I am going to be in F. Next year I will probably use a couple left over PMU's for domestic trips.
I can definitely understand a lot of the frustration from many on this board. Especially those of you who qualify by segments. It seems to me that DL is biting the hand that feeds them. Someone flying 100 segments a year might be paying less per ticket but it's got to add up to a substantial amount at the end of the year. And I don't agree with their logic that there are too many unused upgrades out there. Delta controls upgrade capacity pretty tightly. It's not as if they are giving every seat away in FC 6 months before the flight.
I flew 28 segments this year and have almost 120,000 MQM's so the new system definitley works for me. 2004 will be the test to see how it all plays out with the domestic upgrade policy. I haven't purchased an L,U or T fare in over 2 years but might start next year. Why pay more for K and take a chance ?
In reponse to criticism that some are being too forceful with DL I say everyone needs to do what they feel is best for them.
