Georgs Platz is bad .... Hamburg itself is safe and beautiful, may be the nicest town in Germany.
If you have time:
-Make a harbour tour (Hafenrundfahrt)
-See Speicherstadt .. I guess you see it on the harbour tour
-Go to the city center .. Jungfernstieg, Gaensemarkt, Grosse Bleichen, Neuer Wall. Go in some Gallerias and may be the food court of Alsterhaus (an upscale department store)
-Make trip to Blankenese
