Having recently negociated the NYC subway, I would hate to be doing it with luggage at rush hour. It may be cheaper, but there is a lot more hassle than just getting on a bus.

it can also take 45mins to get throught the Midtown Tunnel and another 45 minutes to cross town to Penn at 4pm -6pm

beware of city traffic!

(i live 38 miles from the Essex House and we can drive it in 55 minutes - or 2hours 55 minutes- depends on day, time, weather)
