I had the same discussion with an SAS representative a few months back, and I was told to go to the airport. I believe their reason is that sometimes they magically manage to reduce the delay, and then they risk leaving passengers behind.

Note that the airline has no cost of you sitting at the airport for four hours, hence it is very easy for them to ask you to do so.
