I've been shaving with Norelcos for a long time, but I did try a Braun recently. I gave it a good try, using it for close to 4 weeks (it has a 30-day guarantee), and my finding was this: For me, it did shave closer, just a bit. But it did so with more irritation than the Norelco. So I took it back, trading comfort for the ever so slightly closer shave. But as you can see, this is very much a personal preference. If you choose one and don't have good luck, you may want to try another kind. No matter what you choose, you must give it 3 weeks of daily shaving (and don't shave with anything else during that time) for best sense of how well it works.
BTW, buying from Costco is a great idea. That's what I did with the Braun. Last I knew (haven't looked in the last few months), they carried a Braun package and a Norelco package. The best part is they will indeed take it back within the guarantee period. It was no hassle at all, credited right back to the Amex. Braun has a 30-day guarantee. Norelco has a 60-day, so you can try that one longer if you really want to (though you'll probably know after the 3 weeks). Saves you the hassle of invoking the true terms of the manufacturer guarantee, which requires you to ship it to them, etc.
Some people say being able to shave wet is a better choice for those switching from blades. I'm not really sure, not having really done that switch (been using electrics for too long to remember a significant switch).
I have not tried the Panasonic that number_6 and GadgetFreak have mentioned, but it sounds intriguing. I may look into it. I keep thinking it would be nice to have two electrics so I could keep one dedicated to the travel kit, but then again, having two of different types really doesn't work because of the adjustment period.
BTW, models I referenced:
Braun Activator with the self-cleaning base (package from Costco has extra foil and blade)
Norelco Speed XL (package from Costco, not much extra although in the online description at Costco.com it mentions this unit having a Lithium Ion battery, which some Speed XLs do not). This is the one I shave with daily.
