Define "briefcase"...???

As a frequent traveler, I also applaud the minimization of carryons allowed, as I only travel with two, neither of which are gigantically huge (a Tumi Safecase computer backpack, and a 22x14x10 roller.)

Does anyone have an idea of what doesn't count as a briefcase? Do they mean that I must carry my laptop and documents and chargers, etc, in a small hard briefcase (circa 1960), or will a Tumi backpack or softside case be allowed?

I am worried about getting to the airport and having them force me to check one item, when I could have avoided it by changing my second carryon to a different style?

Any experience yet?
