Also, the trip isn't until February, is it likely that Lufthansa seats will become available later? If so, can I book on another airline now so I have a seat and then cancel and re-book on Lufthansa if seats become available? Is there a fee to do this?
Sorry about all of the questions, but I really have no clue.
This is very frustrating. Although LH is part of Star Alliance, they tend to offer better instant availability of award seats to their own Miles and More members than to their Star partners/competitors. Understandable, I suppose.
However, I have had the situation arise a couple of times recently where US members found zero availability on LH when calling US, then have called LH who say there are plenty of seats. On both occasions, I called LH to ask if they could release a couple of seats for a US member, and they confirmed both times. Both US DM members were more than satisfied.
Really, it's a case of talking to a US agent who understands the system and is willing to request seats from another carrier. It doesn't always work, but they should at least try for you.
If you can book an another *A carrier, so much the better. If you later change your plans and rebook the same tickets on a different *A carrier, there's a $100 fee.
Hope this helps!
