Need suggestions: 5 days from Clovis, NM to Cedar City, UT at the end of July?
So, I've got to go do some business in Clovis, NM (CVN), and 5 days later, I need to be in Cedar City, UT (CDC). Since I live in Washington DC, I figured, I'd give myself a hell of roadtrip during the worst time of the year to be traveling in the desert areas. I'm a sucker for pain I guess...Last time I was in Phoenix or Vegas in the summer I felt like I was going to burn up just by walking outside - so I'm not sure why I thought this was going to be a good idea.
Instead of going to WAS-LBB (closest major airport to CVN - other than CVN itself, but that was too expensive to fly into) & another trip WAS-CDC (very expensive to fly into - LAS is 2.5 hrs & SLC is 4.5 hrs away), I decided to fly WAS-LBB one-way, rent a car, drive the hour & a half to CVN, work there for 2 days, then give myself 4-5 days to get upto CDC (according to Google Maps, it's about a 16 hour non-stop drive), and then work in CDC for 2 days, and drive down to LAS to fly home.
So, anyone have any suggestions on what there is to do between these places? I'm on my own for food & lodging - so to save some cash, I was thinking about bringing a tent & sleeping bag - but I'm not sure if the heat will kill me or not (that, and I'm not sure how horrible this will be for my laptop - which will unfortunately be left in the trunk when I'm out doing things!). I'm definitely interested in visiting Corkscrew Canyon & I was just at Zion about a month ago, so if the river's down, I may try a day hike up the Narrows, but am definitely interested in any suggestions or recommendations anyone has.
Thanks in advance!
