When I started to take AE flights, I noticed this, as well. Now, I just ask the GA if he/she will be boarding EXP and PLT's first on this flight. I've never had one tell me no.
I have also had problems with elite boarding on AE, but this seems a bit too bold for me, especially when you may be the only PLT on the flight
