And for the record, the re-routing did not seem automatic. It took 15 minutes for them to find a NW flight to put me on. Unfortunately I had a 6 hr layover at JFK which made it much easier ...

I mean thats the issue. when they have to re-route you, they try to save
money and put you on the same airline.. or partner. In this case its NW.
If you know your routes.. you can certainly ask and in most cases they will
do it.. with little resistance. just stay firm!
AUS-IAH and AUS-EWR would be Continental
AUS-ATL would be delta.. (sometimes they may connect you via DFW
via regional connection)
